2022 is almost here and I know we can all improve our health and fitness in one form or another. Here are three things you need to do to set yourself up for success next year.
Be realistic. Goal setting is important and knowing “why” you want to reach your goals, but it is just as important to be realistic. You cannot expect to go from working out zero days per week to working out six days a week and make it last long term. We also cannot expect to eat perfectly all the time or we will set ourselves up for failure. Be realistic with your goals. Realize that health and fitness is a life long journey and not a 6-week program. Sure you can expect to see some changes at the start like having more energy and feeling better but don’t expect everything to happen at once. Give yourself at least 90 days to see some significant changes and be consistent from there on.
Be consistent. Consistency is the key to success and building healthy habits. It’s not what you do once in a while, it is what you do consistently. You are much better off committing to a realistic schedule of three workouts per week instead of working out five days one week and zero days the next week. We will constantly need to focus on our fitness, nutrition and mindset, it is a never ending journey. Try to not do everything, but be consistent with a few things that will make the biggest impact. “Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.” – Robert Collier
Take action. It all looks great on paper or in our mind. Knowing exactly what to do is great and researching the best methods is all good but it means nothing if you do not take action. Action is what moves you forward. If you don’t take action and get started you will not see change and you will not succeed. There is no perfect time. Life always gets in the way. Time will not magically open up in our schedules, we have to make time. We have to schedule our health into our schedule and we have to be selfish and spend some time on ourselves. If we do not take care of ourselves we will soon not be able to help our friends, family, parents or kids. “Health is like money, we never have a true idea of its value until we lose it.” – Josh Billings. Take action today and make one change that will get you closer to your goals.
