Cardio is an awesome workout. It makes you sweat, it gets your heart pumping. It leaves you feeling exhilarated and energized. It burns calories, strengthens your heart and lowers your blood pressure. This is all amazing!

What is the perfect complement to your cardio? Strength training! With a proper strength training routine, you can prevent overuse injuries that can happen by the repetitive motion of running or cycling. You can tailor a plan that works the opposing muscles. A proper strength training plan will help strengthen the weak muscles and stretch the tight muscles to create balance in the body.

Incorporating a strength training will also allow you to do less cardio workouts. Do cardio three days a week instead of five but use your strength training workouts the other two days.

Not only will strength training make you stronger, strengthen your bones, it will raise your metabolism throughout the day, as the more muscle you have on your body the more calories you will burn throughout the day.

If you prefer one form of exercise over the other, then that’s great! You can do more of it if you enjoy it. But remember to balance it out with other activities in different planes of motion as well. Not always front and back but side to side and adding in rotation.

If I had to choose cardio or strength training to do for the rest of my life I would choose strength. Not because I enjoy it more. I love a good cycling workout. But because the benefits out way cardio for general health and fitness. You can also stimulate a cardio response with strength training as you may have noticed if you’ve been to any of our cycle fusion or group training classes!

If strength training is not part of your routine then add it in this week!
